Bio Gail Ward


A genuine interest in people and a passion for humanitarian issues, the environment, travel and people stories is reflected throughout Gail's work.

Gail Ward was born in the Midlands, from where her family moved to Anglesey. After going to college in Bangor, North Wales, she turned down a job with the BBC and instead went to Corfu with Thomson Holidays. This led to a fascinating and successful career in the Travel Industry. In 2002 Gail took the plunge to work freelance and she is currently based near Chichester on the South Coast of England, from where she works with a variety of clients and media in the UK and Overseas, especially in Africa. Much of her work involves the use of photography to raise awareness of the lives of others. Gail has lived in North Africa, West Africa, South East Asia, Greece, Austria and France, and worked in many more countries. She speaks reasonable French and Greek, and very rusty German.

Education, Lectures, Workshops

Gail partners schools and colleges in an advisory capacity and facilitates workshops and projects that link to educational curriculums, activities and creative learning. Gail is involved with Chichester Education Business in Partnership and other local organisations. She also shares her photography and career experiences through talks, lectures and workshops - delivering workshops for the private, education and NFP sectors. Lectures include Focus on Imaging at the NEC.


Responsible Photography Holidays

Gail has a long and successful involvement with the Travel Industry, having held senior management posts with leading UK Tour Operators, as well as in PR & Account Management. She is especially interested in sustainable community tourism - telling the story of people working hard to alleviate poverty through co-operatives, partnerships and other small business initiatives.  Responsible Photography Holidays, founded by Gail in 2002 alongside local partners in Morocco and Ethiopia, supports sustainable communities, income-generating and conservation projects. Responsible Photography Holidays was set up long before the word 'Responsible' became a trendy marketing term and was established as a specialist photography enterprise for education and leisure, and  although Gail's concept has been copied, Responsible Photography Holidays are still true to their founding beliefs, and remain an independent specialist enterprise that offers very small group photography and walking experiencess - they are not associated with any other business. Naturally sensitive and empathetic to situations, Gail works openly but with respect and discretion, photographing with the minimum of kit and natural light. 

The fact Gail feels so at home in many of the places she photographs and writes about is reflected in her work. She rarely uses shorthand (once 100wpm) a result of being in situation swhere people were suspicious of it, instead writing in longhand or using a small voice recorder.
