Chichester Road Traffic Accident

14th June 2011 - Fatal Road Traffic Accident A259 Nutbourne

This morning a cyclist was killed on the A259 Nutbourne, where I live.  The road will be closed for most of the day while police investigate.   Local residents have witnessed numerous accidents on this road - the A259 between Southbourne and Chidham, most of which involve speeding or overtaking vehicles.  Today, many drivers were more concerned with getting to their destination and had little thought for a family soon to hear news that a loved one had been killed - killed on a stretch of road that should be 30mph and not 40mph.  How many more people will lose their life here before West Sussex County Council take notice of local residents requests and reduce the speed limit? This is a residential road, with access to homes, rural business, a petrol garage, Nutbourne Caravans, The Beijing Palace Restaurant, Caravan Park, Southbourne Surgery, The Travellers Joy, Southbourne Farm Shop and other local business.  It is a coastal village with access to the harbour, enjoyed by children, families, retired residents, dog walkers, cyclists, horse riders; as well as visiting holidaymakers.  There are too many accidents and too many 'near misses' on this stretch of road - and today another life has been lost.

Note the 40mph 'reminder' sign on a street light, just before the bus stop, below. In the
 distance, scene of the accident.

This A259 through Nutbourne is 40mph - it should be 30mph

A view of Nutbourne and the blocked road - this stretch of road is 40mph, it should be 30mph.

Whilst the A27 bypass has had some impact on reducing the amount of traffic using the A259 Emsworth to Chichester road, the volume of traffic passing through the villages of Southbourne, Nutbourne, Chidham, Bosham and Fishbourne is increasing - not just because more houses are being built, squeezed into whatever field or space available.  (It would be interesting to know if anyone from the planning department has recently visited this part of the district and seen the effect that increased building is having on the area).   It is time for the A259 between Chichester and Emsworth to be a consistent 30mph through all the residential villages - how many more people will be killed before this happens?

A rough guide to approximately 8 miles of speed limits on the A259 between Chichester - Emsworth.

1. Leave the roundabout at Chichester to join A259 to Fishbourne - 40mph
2. Just before bend in road entering Fishbourne  - 30mph
3. Near to Hilliers Nursery - 40mph
4. Approaching Bosham - 30mph
5. AFTER houses beyond Bosham roundabout - 30mph ends.
6. Bosham straight - 60mph
7. Reduce speed to 40mph as approach Chidham
8. Through Chidham and Nutbourne 40mph - note that there are homes on either side of the road, access to business premises, a garage, a pub and restaurant, caravan parks, farm shop, nurseries, etc
9. Just by the entrance to Loveders Caravan Park - the 40mph reduces to 30mph (OR if driving from Southbourne in the opposite direction, this is where the speed limit increases to 40mph). It is dangerous as motorists accelerate quickly, then try to overtake when vehicles indicate to turn off the road, not always noticing that there are 2 sets of bollards in the middle of the road - which are used as a crossing point by pedestrians.
10.From Southbourne, through Emsworth to A27/Havant - 30mph
11. There are cycle lanes on both sides of the road - although these are not consistent.
