Photo essays

People and their lives - the highs, the lows, the struggles, the achievements.  Bringing an awareness of the lives of others, telling  their story with respect and integrity, encouraging  friendship, truth and  justice  - that's where photography has a real purpose - and responsibility. Truth in photography is the foundation of Gail's work - documenting what she see's, factually and honestly.

'Growing up in the shadow of Chernobyl' was shot in 2006, a year before the 21st anniversary of the nuclear disaster that still impacts on life today. Gail was criticised for telling the story in colour, but the whole point was to tell a postive story of the children  Gail met and photographed, whilst ensuring they would relate to the images.  Belarus is only three and half hours flight from the UK - yet life couldn’t be more different.  70% of the radioactive dust from the Chernobyl explosion fell on Belarus, contaminating the air and the land, impacting on everyday life and resulting in serious health, social, psychological and social repercussions that still impact on life today. As with most of Gail's work,  it was the children’s decision as to how and where and if, they were photographed.  They loved seeing themselves on a small digital camera but were even more fascinated by the film cameras. Photographs from this essay have been exhibited and published.

'Living in the shadow of invasion' is part of a larger body of work shot in Crete that has been ongoing for a few years. Shot in colour and monochrome, the project continues to develop.

'Living in the shadow of tourism' is another ongoing project telling the story of people whose lives are being impacted on through the influx of tourism and the inevitable change and development this brings.

'Living in the shadow of genocide' is about life in Rwanda today, of looking to the future, and of hopes and dreams.  It's  an important project because Gail is documenting the lives of  people over a number of years, telling their story - past, present and future.
